90s Styles

The title isnt right. I’m nearly 50 years old now. I remember a lot of things I first saw in the 1990s, like Clueless. But mostly I remember science fiction, things like Logan’s Run and THX 1133. These are clearly not of the 90s. I think THX 1133 came out in 1971, I wasnt even born then. I wonder why I came across them. I can only imagine its because they were “on the tele” and I found them compelling so looked further into that aesthetic. Its a clear influence.

I thought about this style whilst on my facebook looking at an ad thats running to promote my page, one of these images is on the advert. Ive noticed that only men seem to be liking it. Men of similar age to me, this isnt universal but a real trend. I wondered why and started to think about it. It led me to think about more culture from my early life and what women of the time, contemporaries in age and status, thought about and remembered Clueless. Its odd because although I saw the film, probably a few years after it was out, I dont really remember people, women, I knew going on about it.

This seems a long explanation to justify advertising now!

Anyone that came here from my socials will know that I asked Bing to “tell me about grunge fashion and cross that with girl power and clueless and condense that into a prompt i can use to generate compelling art”

it came up with:
Imagine a canvas where the raw energy of ’90s grunge collides with the unapologetic confidence of girl power. Picture a modern-day Cher Horowitz, clad in her signature yellow plaid suit, striding through a cityscape. Her eyes reflect determination, her lips whispering timeless mantras like “As if!” and “You’re a virgin who can’t drive.” The background swirls with hints of Nirvana posters and rebellious graffiti, juxtaposed against the polished elegance of Cher’s tailored blazer.

I went to Midjourney to /imagine that and it spit these images out. What do we think?

They are interesting images but somehow dont seem to represent the film. I suppose thats AI for you, focusing on the woman more than anything else.

I guess what I’m trying to get at here is what would be the equivalent to my ideas of THX 1133 and Logans Run in the minds of other people? Clueless seems to me to be, as with most things back then, an American culture along the lines of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which I obviously enjoyed as well. Now of course all I can think of is what was the British culture of the time?
