There’s a certain magic in looking through the archives. As a photographer, revisiting an image from over ten years ago feels like opening a time capsule. It isn’t just about the architecture; it’s about the atmosphere of a moment that has since matured.

This shot, taken along the banks of the River Trent in Gainsborough, captures the town at a pivotal crossroads. At the time, the bold, colourful “Tetris-style” facade of the Whitton’s Mill development was a fresh, daring addition to the skyline. It stood as a vibrant signal of regeneration, marking the transition of this historic inland port from its heavy engineering roots into a modern residential and retail hub.

The Vision: Old Meets New

What drew me to this scene a decade ago was the sheer friction between eras. To the right, the traditional red-brick warehouses and pitched pantile roofs whisper stories of the 19th-century industrial boom and firms like Marshall, Sons & Co. To the left, the modern complex pops with defiant blues and reds against a characteristically moody Lincolnshire sky.

I chose a Dutch tilt (tilting the camera) to inject a sense of kinetic energy. I didn’t want a static architectural record; I wanted to capture the “lean” into the future that the town was experiencing at the time. The leading lines of the black metal railings and the brick embankment pull you forward, mirroring the flow of the tidal Trent itself.

Behind the Lens: Technical Details

Looking back at the specific look, I focused on:

  • Perspective: Utilising a wide-angle lens to exaggerate the leading lines and the dramatic “tilt.”
  • Contrast Management: The lighting was challenging—the heavy, brooding clouds threatened rain, but they provided a perfect soft-box effect that made the primary colours of the building truly sing.
  • Composition: By keeping the horizon skewed, I was able to fit more of the towering modern facade and the traditional rooftops into a single, high-impact frame.
